Nicolas Cage to Play Joe Exotic in new series from Imagine Television Studios

Nicolas Cage will play the infamous tiger king, Joe Exotic, in an eight-hour limited series.

The series centers around Joe Shreibvogel, an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park — even at the risk of losing his sanity. The series will live in the lion’s den with Joe, explore how he became Joe Exotic, and how he lost himself to a character of his own creation.

Dan Lagana, a Peabody Award-winning writer and showrunner of American Vandal, will showrun and write a the eight-episode limited series.

Brian Grazer (Empire) and Samie Kim Falvey for Imagine; Dan Lagana (American Vandal); Paul Young (Key & Peele) for Make Good Content; Nicolas Cage for Saturn Films; and Scott Brown and Megan Creydt for Texas Monthly will executive produce.

The series is based on the Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” by Leif Reigstad which Lagana and Young optioned through Lagana’s overall deal at CBS Television Studios in June of 2019, well before the The Tiger King docuseries became a worldwide phenomenon.

The series is produced by Imagine Television Studios, CBS Television Studios, Make Good Content, Saturn Films, and Texas Monthly.
